Rickson Page - the fight list
--

So I'm sitting at my computer reading a couple e-mails and I come across
a particular one that draws more
than a bit of
interest. Seems one of readers of Tim Mousel's forum (thanks Poncho)
had come across a VERY interesting
piece of info on Rickson on a fighting list. Normally I am a bit
suspect of unconfirmed information,
especially a document of this magnitude. So here is how the story goes:

Apparently Rickson and/or his friends noticed that there was
controversy on his 400+ record and set about
to finally gather a list (something I have found to be a lesson in
futility.) Anyway, they spent over a year
doing this and came up with 407 matches. The intro also notes that
there were many other altercations that
have happened that were not documented for legal reasons. The writer
suggests that the actual number is
probably over 500. Here is the two E-mails clipped together in a word
file: Ricksonlist.doc.

One problem is that the list is given in absolutely no order. None
what so ever. So I put it into excel (with
many back breaking hours) and it allowed me to get some stats for you
all. Here is the excel spreadsheet:
Rickson.xls.

                                                                   Is
This List Legit?

I also have some questions, as I am sure you all do. The main one
of course is Is this list legit? After
reviewing it, my answer is NO (with enthusiasm). There are quite a few
reasons that I now suspect it might
not be. They include:

For one, he fights 52 akido practicioners. We all know
that akido is a non violent martial art and
              doesn't embrace NHB :-)

Once sorted the list gives fights from 1/23/73 to
11/28/97. So I guess Rickson was 12 when he first
started fighting NHB. And while he was 12-13 he fought a
425 lb capoeria stylist. Hmmm... he is
              good!

The dates for a few fights on there (Hugo Duarte and Zulu)
are not accurate, as well as the weights of
              the fighters.

8 of the 9 sumos are listed as weighing under 190 lbs,
which I find strange.

Another interesting coincidence is that the list has many
repetitions of fighters (and similar sounding
names), giving the exact same date several times.
Rematches after they got smoked, or an attempt to
make the list bigger? Regardless, there are not 407
different opponents on the list, but probably closer
              to 370.

There are many obvious matches overlooked as well. Only
maybe 3 of the 6 Japan Vale Tudo matches
are listed. Why? Also, the fight against Equada that is
listed on my page below and mentioned by
Rickson in one of his recent interviews, is not in this
list. Maybe it was not NHB, which is all this list
seems to be. Regardless, these and others have been
(carelessly?) overlooked.

The average weight of the fighters in the 407 matches (in
other words, counting repeats) is 192.2. In
other words about the same as Rickson's present weight.
Rickson fought more than a couple guys
under 160 lbs. Since the matches go back so far it is
certainly possible that this is b/c he was younger
and lighter as well. But they are not arranged like
that. He was fighting 190 pounders at age 12, and
140 pounders after he had won both Vale Tudos.

Rickson has never claimed to have over 400 NHB victories.
The claimed record also includes sambo,
judo, wrestling, etc (since he got his black belt)

This list includes fights in Brazil that supposedly
occured after Rickson had retired and left the country.

This list omits nearly every jiujitsu fighter known to
have faced Rickson between 82-87 (his reign as
absoluto champ) and includes a slew of jiujitsu men whom
no one has ever heard of (hint, they don't
              exist). [Thanks Harlot]

He fought a 'Shootfighter' in 1981, years before the style
existed, and years before the name was
              invented by Bart Vale.

Format: Style/# of victories

Akido/52 BJJ/13 Boxing/5 Capoeria/35 Freestyle
Fighting/11 Hapkido/4 Jiu Jitsu/39 Judo/41

Karate/48 Kenpo/2 Kick Boxing/5 Kung Fu/5 Lutra Livre/45
Pro wrestling/1 Sambo/5
Savate/27

Street fighting/17 Submission Grappling/4 Sumo/9 Tae Kwon
Do/27 Wrestling/12

I really expected that a lot more of the guys would be dumb
strikers, but there are a LOT of ground
fighters here. Let me know what you guys think of this list, and where
it came from. Current theory is that
with all the repititions, it came from a computer program that
manufactures names set up by an over zealous
fan. In support of my page, feel free to send me money too if you
want. Then I could actually afford to go
spend some time training with Rickson and maybe ask a question or two!
I hear its $200 an hour.
