[W126 Coupe] 560 engine - oil filter gasket

I bought a Frahm oil filter last week which had a rubber gasket/seal in the box but I took my car to a local shop for oil change and the old filter which they removed did not have the a gasket ring installed and also, the "handle" for the drop-in filter was turned upside down.  Amsoil brand did not have a separate gasket in the box.

In any event, now the oil filter compartment is leaking, presumably b/c the gasket was not installed OR b/c the filter is upside down.

Questions:

Should all 560 engines use the gasket?

Should the handle be on top for installation/removal?
