[W126 Coupe] chilling … and looking ahead

Hi Gerry,
Yes. You need to drop the exhaust, the shield and then the drive shaft.
The drive shaft is marked for front to rear orientation but, I'd mark it
with a white paint pen just for good measure to assure correct alignment of
the shaft splines on re-assembly. If after removing the bearing you find a
stiff u-joint you may want to apply a torch and heat things up to see if you
can get it to move freely before replacing the bearing and holder. Check
the rear pinion seal at the differential while you are in there and lube the
e-brake linkages and cables too.
I have successfully replaced two center support bearings while doing the
flex disks front and rear on the SEC and a 126 sedan. However, after doing
one of two126 sedan, I had to replace the entire drive shaft (ordered
through Jonathan) in order to deal with a bad (as in stiff) u-joint that
left a vibration while driving at speeds above 50mph. So, that u-joints
condition is key to a continued smooth drive.
Good luck,
Dick
