Are you guy's talking about the emergency brakes inside the the rear disc's? That's the only place where there is a shackle.

> You could be describing the flex disk that binds the drive shaft to the differential..  These are at both ends of the drive shaft and usually the front fails first.  I've always replaced both at the same time and replaced the center support bearing as well.  It's just normal wear and tear.  On a proper lift, drop the exhaust, drop the metal shield and then go about removal of the flex disks, drive shaft and center support bearing.  Inspect and if needed replace the rear pinion seal if it's leaking heavily.  It will weep lightly if the differential vent is blocked just from pressure and if this is the case, just leave it alone.  Mine as well drain and replace the differential fluid if it's not been done.
