I've always replaced both at the same time and replaced the center support bearing as well. It's just normal wear and tear. On a proper lift, drop the exhaust, drop the metal shield and then go about removal of the flex disks, drive shaft and center support bearing. Inspect and if needed replace the rear pinion seal if it's leaking heavily. It will weep lightly if the differential vent is blocked just from pressure and if this is the case, just leave it alone. Mine as well drain and replace the differential fluid if it's not been done.

I did both at the same time where it's a complete removal of the rear end. It's a full day of work and other components should be replaced at the same time and maintenance on numerous pieces completed as well.
