>From speaking to a few people, I think that the engine wiring harness can
be bought for about $600 plus 4 hours of labor (although it depends what
your mechanic wants to charge). I did meet a guy who replaced the entire
wiring harness on his SL600 and it cost him about $7000.
Other things to consider is the evaporator core replacement which is a 20+
hour job (why I see so many W140's in TX with the windows rolled down in
the summer) and the double glazing glass which must cost a fortune to
replace is it breaks.
If you are thinking of one, get a 97 or newer. By then they had updated
fuel injection, ignition and climate control systems, and they had OBDII
which makes diagnosing problems a little simpler.
I considered buying a 2003 CL55 and looked into those cars. They can also
be maintenance nightmares. they have air / hydraulic shock systems that
cost a fortune to go through. I was told to avoid the earliest models with
ABC (active body control) as they can fail suddenly fail. People who have
owned W140's and then the W220 after them say that they W220 is a much
cheaper car to run.
I would still love a W215 CL55 but they depreciate like crazy so I'm going
to wait a little longer and let them go down a little more.
Good luck.
