they can be extremely tight...

I would pull harder...the worst that can happen is you will break the knobs and they arent expensive from MB.

Perhaps the knobs became loose and tended to slip off so someone may have glued them on. Tapping on them to try to "break" the bond may work but they are connected to the controls that may not like being hammered. I'd try that gently.


Or if you have an etching tool, place a heavy steel item/plate/putty knive blade/whatever against the side of the knob grip and carefully use the etching tool against the metal to in turn vibrate the knob. Strange they don't come off.... but they ARE over 20 years old and might have never been removed before.
