Dan, the service manual definitely implies that you pull them off (Job 68-200). 

I would think that those knobs are still available, ie, if you do damage them. Big pliers or vise-grips with rubber-protected jaws? Maybe a slight tap axially with a rubber mallet to break the 'bond'? Your heat gun suggestion might be the ticket, too.
