My 86' SEC, 06' S500 and 04' CL55 all take the same Group 49 battery.
It's been the OEM battery size of choice for most, if not all of the S class Benz since at least as far back as the 116 bodies.

Lead acid batteries are old technology and I won't buy
them for anything but a low budget beater. AGM is the only
way to go these days and that is all I will put in any of my
Mercs.
I've spent way too much time and money over the years
replacing corroded battery trays etc. In the case of my CL55, the damn
lead acid battery leaked and dissolved the plastic housing of the power
trunk pump that Benz conveniently located under the battery. Oh yeah,
you can't just buy the plastic reservoir either- You need to buy a new
pump.
Honestly, for what these cars cost new, you'd think AGM
batteries would be standard equipment- Especially if you're gonna hide
them in the trunk above a bunch of other pricey components that don't
take too kindly to sulfuric acid.
With that said, in my option
the Optima is they are crap as well.
Their goofy 'six-pack'
construction and non-standard post location make them more of a pain
than they are worth to try and shoe horn into the car.
I only
purchase the Deka Group 49 AGM batteries for my Mercs now.
The look
and fit like the OEM lead acid batteries and the posts are in the proper
location so you don't have to rig the tray or cables to make them
fit.
Sure, they cost $185, but they are zero maintenance and exact
fit replacements.
IMO, the only thing a lead acid battery is good
for is if you are doing a concourse restoration and it must be original
down to the choice of battery.
Your mileage may
very-

Walmart and Sam's and Costco have batteries for
great prices $70-80 and 8
year warranties, with full replacement
for either 3 or 4 years, 3 I think.
