Mike,
I used the MB dealership in Palo Alto when I lived in Los Altos but I moved to San Diego in 2001. The Palo Alto dealership did good work but they sure were expensive. That said though, I couldn't in good conscious recommend anyone that I hadn't used in recent times, I'm afraid that my recommendation wouldn't be of much value to you. However, I didn't use an MB mechanic for my alignment (the dealer doesn't want to get involved with modified vehicles). Because I also have a Ford product I was at the Ford dealership here in Boise and mentioned to the rep that I was looking for an alignment shop anywhere in the area that could work on my MB Cpe. I thought he was blowing smoke when he said that he had the best technician for what I needed but I think now that he was right . . .so far so good. I would start making phone calls and getting referrals.
By the way, I bought my cpe from HWY 101, a resale dealer of exotic vehicles in San Bruno. The guy's name that sold it to me was Dell; I believe that Dell commuted from Half Moon Bay where he lived to the car lot in San Bruno so maybe he no longer works there but If the business is still there they may be close enough to you to use their shop or at least give you a worthwhile referral.
Good luck Mike,
Ernie
PS: If you should contact them and Dell is still working there give him my best (he couldn't possibly remember but what the heck).
