Are you sure the leak is on the compressor shaft? Every leak I've seen (in
my minimal experience) is at the lump on top of the compressor where the
refrigerant lines are connected. There are four o-rings inside that lump and
two for the external lines. It is a DIY to replace them. My 560SEL is on
it's 7th year with the "wrong" (neoprene) o-rings in there and my SEC is on
it's third with the right (viton) o-rings in that lump. In both cases the
high pressure side o-rings were shredded.
I'd be VERY tempted to get a salvage yard compressor that turned smoothly by
hand, put in some new o-rings into the lump, and give it a go.
