[W126 Coupe] Problem with 1990 560 SEC

Well Group, I have certainly learned something from all of you that I never knew existed. This AM I lifted the cover from my sleeping 560 and sure enough there is a slight angle to the left. How am I going to put it to my advantage? At the next car show I attend I’m going to start making bets with unsuspecting 500-560 owners about their steering wheel position. Maybe I can entice a few Accura owners, also.

Cheer!

Henric,

A picture is certainly worth a thousand words; & it tells the story of the Steerring Column and Wheel. I appreciate your time and help.

Here's a unique look at the C126 stripped. You can see the two steering column mounting locations and where it breeches the firewall.

cheers,

Henric

Stephen,

Without going out into the cold garage to look at the steering column, I believe I can say the steering column has no bends, it runs at a slight angle all the way from the dash attachment bracket, through the fire wall, and straight on to the steering gear which is mounted on the car frame. The steering gear is mounted on the frame at a position closer to the center line of the car as compared to the center of the drivers seat, hence it has to be angled to the right to mount the gear on the frame, OR have a complicated

u-joint in the steering column. Benz chose the simpler mounting. Lucky for us, no u-joint to keep lubricated and possibly require replacement at some point in time.
