[W126 Coupe] Decision time with regard to the "new" MBCoupes list

Oh, Thanks Steve.. I was thinking you'd have to be logged into the new .org
site to post to the site and monitor other's postings.

Well, I just registered, but plan on keeping both for now..

Thanks again Steve for everything,

Chet

BTW, will we be receiving only MBCOUPES postings or the 500E stuff too??

Chet, thanks for the comments.

Just so that we are clear, the new List ([MBCOUPES] mbcoupes at mbcoupes.org)
was/is exactly the same as the old List (this one - Mercedes Coupes Mailing
Lists <mbcoupes at mbcoupes.com>). It worked exactly the same way, ie, as a
mailing list, not primarily as a message board. There is a message board
attached, which can be a repository of stuff that we want to keep visible,
like How To's, etc. But the List works the same, via email, and would be
where all of the day-to-day emails would occur.

The idea is that the new List WOULD be exactly the same as the old, but we
would be able monitor it better, as the current List is not monitored.

Hope this helps clearing up any misconceptions.

Hey Gerry,

Once again you've stepped up added valuable contribution to our MBCOUPES
community, thanks.. This one is an on going service to us all and it is
especially generous of you and I sure everyone appreciates it. But it will
take a good bit of time before a majority of the listers will convert over.
I would venture a guess that the reason this old format works is because we
network through our email, which is (in most cases) always on. It's easy to
skim the new postings and delete/reply as to mood hits. But the key thing
is that I don't have to do anything special to stay in touch with
MBCOUPEsters. Yes, sometimes it's a bit of a pain to skim through some of
the garbage, but there is a lot of good stuff too. Stuff that I know, I'd
miss if weren't logged on to a message board.

I use message boards (cars, computers, home repairs, you name it) all day
long and think they are great, but I'm usually looking for something
specific and don't have the time to dedicate to 1 or 2 of them to be a real
contributor. That kind of bothers me, because I'm not one to take without
giving back.

Message boards are a phenomenal success and a great source for information
and social interaction and the way it's done now. But, as far as converting
us old timers (I joined up shortly after Satish set MBCoupes up) over night,
it's going to take a little more time.

Thanks again,

Chet

Hello all,

I got sick and tired of the spam on this list, not to mention the fact that
nobody is minding the store here to stop it, and also the fact that this
list software is really circa 1995 in terms of capabilities. I'm talking
woefully out of date.

I thought I'd provide folks with an alternative and with the help of Steve
Nervig, we very quickly did just that. We have had about 28 people sign up
for the new list, and there has been some traffic on it.
However, I do see via this list that people want to continue using this
antiquated list, and I guess people don't mind the spam here.
The trial period for the "new" list at mbcoupes.org is coming to a close on
September 2nd, and after that point I'll be required to pay $65 to continue
to operate the list for the next year. I don't mind paying this myself (as I
paid for the mbcoupes.org domain name already) for the good of the
community, if people want to use it. It's not a money thing, at all. But it
seems that the usage has been lower than I thought -- people didn't seem to
want to move from this list over to the new one.
I'm good with that, folks vote with their feet .. or not. If people don't
want to use the new list, I'm not going to push the issue nor spend $65 per
year to operate a dead list.

So, just a heads up to all, I'm going to let the "new" mbcoupes.org e-mail
list expire on September 2nd. I will delete all names and email addresses
for the 28 folks who signed up. For those who signed up for the new list, a
heart-felt thanks for your willingness to try something new. I think Steve
will also delete the sign-up web page he created for the new list.
Cheers,
Gerry
