[W126 Coupe] Sad to say it, I'm selling my SEC

Steve,

I agree; and would add that the price is based on what the buyer is willing to pay.  Although I was looking for a 1991 560 SEC in good condition, I found a 1990 that was well maintained & in great condition mechinically & cosmetically.  I did not hesitate to give the seller his asking price of $10k.

Stephen

All great points.  I'm fortunate to be in a position that I don't have to sell the car, putting me in the "drivers seat"  (collective groan?)

Time is on my side.  Having an SEC as a second car is pretty rough!  Last summer my smaller MBZ got sick suddenly and I was forced to take the SEC on a road trip...........Tough!

The "going rate" is dependent on many things, the obvious being year, mileage, condition, location, options, etc. In all cases, the 126 coupes now appear to be at their fully depreciated stage and should gradually start appreciating over time. 1991 represents the last year of the series and these are generally considered the best having reaped the benefit of Mercedes' evolutionary changes through the years. They also only imported a little over 2000 to North America in '91. The high end of the current market for a '91 560 SEC coupe is currently represented by a seller in CA that has one with 16,000 miles on it and is asking $39,000. As previously stated, you can find plenty of high mileage, fair condition examples in the $5-6K range. These will be pricy to bring to a reliable, excellent condition state but are good platforms if you aim is to heavily modify the car. Original, low mileage examples in excellent condition will always bring more when maintained in original condition. That said, a well done (not over done) modified coupe can be a very nice ride and are worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

The above is only my opinion of course though I have owned 5, 560 coupes and sedans over the years, most of which were 1991 models. Currently have a one-owner '91 with 82,000 miles that I will likely keep forever.

Out of curiosity, what is the conventional wisdom on pricing these days?

I bought a 1991 560SEC recently as a project/driver/running report car ( Mercedes Enthusiast Magazine) but got caught short on another project, so am considering selling.  Don't want to lose my shirt after a short ownership, and would keep the car rather than give it away.

What do you all see as the "going rate" by condition (using a 1-6 scale, 1 being concours and 6 being essentially a complete parts car)?

Truth is, I really don't want to sell it, but I have to convince myself.

Thanks.

Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear about selling your baby. It has always been one of my favorites, just down right clean and beautiful.  I understand the car sitting, mine hasn't moved in almost three years now. With the resale market on these cars being so low, I'm just going to keep mine and get her up and running sometime in the future. Sad to think it has turned into a project again.
Well, good luck with the sale, hope she finds a good home. Somebody will be getting a great car.
Regards,
Brent
