[W126 Coupe] Oil change

Early synthetics got a bad reputation for leaking. This was because,
despite the claims of the oil manufacturers, the seal-swell characteristics of
the new synthetics were different from those of the mineral oils they
replaced. If the seal-swell rate was lower, the seals shrank and oil leaked from
crankshaft seals and rocker cover seals. If the rate was higher, the seals
swelled a little extra and the engine was tight. Then if the owner changed
back to mineral oil, or added a quart when no synthetic was to be had,
things got really bad. The crank seals had become worn, in their turgid state,
and then relaxed. The valve cover seals were compressed when swelled, and
when the different oil was added, everything leaked like, well, an old
English sports car. Now, most think the situation has improved; you should
even have no problem switching back and forth.

Jay,
My experience has been the same - no leaks, no engine work, etc on
multiple cars with many combined years and miles. I'm sticking to it. You stick
to what you do if it works for you. Just don't spread falsities about
synthetic oil please! You obviously have NO personal experience with it
yourself, as you state below. So everything you are saying is either heresay or
what you may have read somewhere. What I am stating is personal
experience, and good experience at that.

Believe what you want, do what you want.
I have three cars that are 50 years old with over 200,000 miles each.
Never used synthetic, original motors...all GM engines.
i like to put my cars on a lift every three or four months for visual
inspections and change the oil and filters when I do
The cost of oil is minimal compared to the cost of engine work.
"Supposedly" is in the eyes of the beholder.
Where is your dealer?

Sorry, but that is the biggest nonsense I've ever heard! I am proof of
that with my fleet, all switched over later, zero problems. And its not a
waste of money, actually, I calculated I save quite a bit of money. I used
to do what you do, every 2500 (close) with dino. If driving 10K per year,
that's 4 oil changes, plus the work, etc. Now I do it once and done. Less
mess, less work, less money. And supposedly better for your engine. I
have over 100K on each vehicle I have it in (6 cars, Rv, motorcycle).
I say its nonsense because there is no proof and your statement could
scare people off from it, which is silly. And which Mercedes dealer will tell
you this? Mine hasn't.

Synthetic is only good when used from when the car was new.
1987 560 never had synthetic in it when new
Once a car has used regular oil, synthetic is a waste of money and
Mercedes will tell you this
Since I have a diesel I use 15W 40 Shell Rotella in all my cars
I buy it at Walmart best price on motor oils and anti freeze. The only
things I buy at Walmart
But any 10w 40 is fine.
Synthetic is not a really a synthetic bur motor oil with an additive.
I change oil and filter in my car every 2000 miles or every four months.

Hi All,
What is the best oil to use for a 560 SEC.
My car needs an oil change and I want to be sure to get the right one.
I ask this because somebody told me the best is Mobil-1 synthetic.
That might be true for new cars, but I do not know for my 1987 560 SEC.
