Hello Dan,
Your way with words intrigues me (in a complimentary way). If by hire means that you get a chauffeur with the vehicle I can understand the $75 CAN a day other wise I am thinking that rentals are available for less than $30 US.
I am not familiar with the acronyms CDW or LDW but I suspect that you are talking about physical coverage's for your own vehicle? Collision and comprehensive are terms that we see on USA policies but there are other auxiliary coverage's such as rental reimbursement or loss of use that can be added onto the basic "full coverage" policies. In the event that you are involved in an accident in a rental vehicle, you may be held accountable for damages by the rental agency regardless of fault but your own insurance policy may extend collision coverage to borrowed or rented replacement vehicles such as would be the case of your experience in SF. The deductible that is applicable to your own vehicle would of course apply to the rental vehicle but many credit card companies will take care of your deductible if you have used their card for the rental transaction (see the terms and conditions of use on your credit cards).
My experience with a car rental transaction in Southern Spain was that the daily rent was reasonable but the insurance on that small vehicle was expensive; I would suggest looking into the possibility of extending the coverage that you have on your personal vehicle at home to rental/hired vehicles abroad for a more reasonable fee before leaving home on your trip (you would want to have a certificate of coverage to take with you to show the rental agency that you have such coverage).
Best regards,
Ernie

Hi Dan,
If you do not have full coverage on your own policy that provides for
full collision and LDW while traveling, you have no choice but to get
this added coverage and at the added cost. I know in the Northwest
(ie., Calgary) you need to add for glass coverage where they use gravel
for traction in the winter on all the roadways.
So, if you are comfortable with your insurance companies coverage
provisions you can decline and save the $. Just be sure you have all
the needed coverage confirmed and in writing on your personal and
umbrella policies before taking this cost saving measure.
By the way, I had a rental in San Francisco totaled when a fellow acting
out what I presume was the Steve McQueen movie, Bullet came over a hill
and rear ended me at a red light just opposite the Marriott at the
wharf. I had selected my personal policy for all damage coverage and
declined on the rental as per usual. The bill came into my offices for
$20 some odd thousand and the offending drivers policy paid all costs.
Had he been uninsured, I am told my policy would have paid the bill in
full.
Safe travels.
Dick
