[W126 Coupe] A/C 560 SEC update

Thanks for all of your terrific suggestions on hunting down my A/C issues. I
am printing off your comments so my mechanic can answer the questions
regarding high and low side pressures etc. If there are any other thoughts,
no matter how wild, please advise so I can do a complete diagnostic
assessment.
Marcus, I did look up the Phoenix and 48hp, but didn't find anything on the
replicating of the steel panels. I have to assume that the glass Lorenzer
and others are out of the question.
Of course I got sidetracked reading the great story on the California
repossession-that should be required reading for all!!!
I think Jono would just tell me to stop fooling around and buy a damn
widebody!! I will PM him about the seats I mentioned. It's just that I
really love driving this car and have too much money in to turn it into a
parts car. AAAARGHHH the thought! Any thoughts or comments will be helpful,
you can't hurt my feelings after I was dumb enough to keep writing checks.
BTW, is there, or isn't there a MAX setting on the A/C and can you change
back to R12?
John

Jay,
I put a set of Akebono's on my wife's Volvo - absolutely terrific. Very
much
like OEM friction feel, and essentially NO brake dust. When I wanted to put
them on my '84 500 SEC, I could not find them listed any place; not even on
the Akebono Web site.
Could you tell me where you sourced your pads?
Thanks for the help,
Dave Crawford

I use Akebono, non racing pads and rotors, Made in USA of Canada No
squeal, no black dust.
My car is a cruiser 85 mph on highway, not for racing or performance.
Met some "tuner" guys a few years ago and they recommended Akebono.
Racing pads and rotors work best only when they get hot, nor meant for
street use.
There is enough friction in general in the world, do not need anymore
keep cruisin

Reason I like the slotted is not so much for air to get in, but w/ organic
pads you do have a fair bit of off gassing (more so then w/

I also like that you have more leading edges on the slotted rotor, while it
does dimish pad life it also helps keep the face of the pad fresh for
optimal
friction.
As for rotor manufacture, I'd stick w/ ATE, Balo or Zimmermann. The
consumer
branded brembo's are coming from China last set I saw...:(
www.buyeuroparts.com is my pref'd vendor, honest and knowledgeable!

I have Brembo crossed drilled slot rotors on my 84' coupe. But when it comes
time to replace them I will go back to a quality stock rotor. The slotted
rotors provide a means for air to pass through the rotors keeping them
cooler
than stock. In a race car application this is something you would definetely
want. But for everyday driving they will wear out your brake pads twice as
fast. Whether or not they are worth buying is a personal preference kind of
thing that will ultimately be up to your pocket book. I personally think
that
a quality stock pair would do the job. Stock rotors vary in price quite a
bit
and that's gbecause of the difference in the quality of the metal used to
make them, Brakes systems are a place you don't want to skimp or cut
corners.
There are a few companies online that have them. I got mine from
Autohausaz.com. Brakeworld.com also has a good selection. I hope that helps
in your decision.

Is it worth buying cross drilled rotors for my 82' 380 sec or stay stock?
Where do you recommend to buy the rotors? best deal?
thanks,

I have come to expect terrific advice from this experienced group, since I
have now stumped 3 mechanics, spent over $2500, and still no solution. My
1988 560 SEC used to have good A/C. It was changed a couple of years ago
from R12. The system lost pressure after a couple of months, and hasn't
acted right for the last 2 years. The initial problem was that the Cold air
would switch to heat for no apparent reason. It was suggested that a new
mono valve, which helped for a while. I think I recall that with the A/C
setting on high and the high speed fan switched on, it would go into max,
which it no longer does. I have put in a new controller and new compressor
with no real improvement. My fancy shop recommended that I replace the
evaporator for about $2500, but they didn't bother to mention Cryo-seal,
which I just put in for about $200 bucks. I want to replace the dash later,
so I was looking for a reasonable fix. The A/C now works, but is not cold,
unless I'm running at highway speeds. I'm told that it could take a week of
running for the Cryo-seal to get up to speed. I'm really baffled here team,
can anyone advise?
I took the car to one specialty A/C shop and the mechanic told be the
compressor was stuck-only problem was he was pointing to the pump!!!LOL
Also-Can you still buy rear wide body AMG style panels anywhere? How about
Rocarro seats?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
John

Sounds like the frustrations I went through with my SEC a/c after I first
bought it. In my case the a/c manifold hose was clogged and kept killing
compressors. I haven't heard much good with switching from R12 in these
cars. You have to make sure the right amount of oil and freon is in there
for starters, that your expansion valve isn't clogged, and that the
receiver/dryer is replaced along with the compressor when the job is done.
How about the high/low pressure switches? They should be able to hook up
gauges to see what is going on. Might be time to find another a/c shop like
I did.
There's a guy on benzworld in the 126 forum (48hp) who is having widebody
panels made from ones he just cut off a wrecked carcass he bought. Should
be available soon. You might want to search there and read up on it, look
for Widebody - Rise of the Phoenix or a posting along those lines.
Good luck!

W/o having the car to play with and test it's tough to say... No real
reason to throw parts @ these cars, the diagnostic trees are Pretty Good...
I'd like to know what high/low side pressure are @ idle and 2500RPM.. I'd
like to test all the actuators, test the mono valve.. Who rebuilt your push
button? Hopefully not programa...
As for panels, they are most def NLA...
I have a set of blue recaro ideal c's comp w/ 126 rails etc...
Drop an email if you are interested.

Dick brings up a great point. The rest of the system can be A-OK, but if
the aux fan in front of the radiator isn't working, it won't cool right
either. Check and make sure that is on when you turn the a/c on (compressor
engaged).
