[W126 Coupe] drive by wire?

My 88 Euro 560SEC has ASR, recently something odd has happened where the
check engine light ... or what i think might be the check engine light as
it's furthest to the right on the cluster but not marked lights up and then
my gas pedal becomes really stiff. I don't think that the gas pedal is
computer controlled which makes this behavior odd but It does not impact
driving badly but I'm wondering if anyone has encountered this issue and
whether you all can shed light.
