Henry,
To second that opinion.. remove the entire package and do the r&r work
on a bench then reinstall. Kinda thought I'd expressed that in an
earlier post re: 'massive fuel leak'.
Where you will have two lines and wonder which one needs clamping, go
for the larger diameter hose with the second outer casing that should
feed to the fuel filter left side as I recall. That should stop the
tank leakage while you work at the bench. Set-up so the rear of the car
is at your doorway to allow the fuel and fumes to evaporate more easily.
Keep away from light bulbs, open flames all that stuff during the
entire process. No lamps other than a Piezl headband model or
something similar for safety. I use my trail Piezl and it is safe. So
something battery operated should be safe. No AC incandescent drop
lights, light sticks and so on. No cell phone.
Be sure and tighten things with care and you should be okay. I always
have a warm body (wife/kid) sit in the car after I think I am done and
turn the ignition switch on/off to energize the fuel pump(s) while I
watch for leaks before starting the engine. You could jumper the fuel
pump relay if you are solo I suppose but, it would take you a few
seconds to move from front to rear to observe and then back
again...better to see if a warm body can give you a hand and reduce the
timing to bare minimum. Yeah, safety is a big thing with fuel so take
extra care.
Not a pro, just a hack and having fun too but, be safe and good luck,
Dick
