It might be a provision for a hand-held fire extinguisher. European MB's
often have an extinguisher mounted at the front edge of the seat, usually
rolled up in a foam piece and attached by a metal bracket and a quick-release
band. In the U.S. these aren't a supported option. One version is also has
a molded tray with a clear plastic cover.

Sounds like a good place to put audio equipment. The Japanese are big on
sounds.

Un-identified cavity:
I was vacuuming the interior of my 1988 560SEC last Friday when I realized
the presence of a cavity under the front passenger side floor mat.
Curiosity got the better of me and I lifted the mat to discover that a
large piece of the moulded high density foam on the underside had been cut and
peeled off leaving a large cavity between the heater channel and the
outboard side panel. A wire with a round connector protruding from under the
centre console was laying on the floor.
Is it possible that this cavity has been used for some kind of accessory
which have since been removed or is it possible that this car was used for
smuggling.
It was imported used from Japan.
Any ideas?
Carl H.

Some of these beauties were owned by dealers.

Carl,
I'm not sure about the cavity around it, but I've found a couple of my
Benz's have the coax wire with the RF connector laying under the
passenger floor mat.
On the car I parted out, I traced the wire to the same area as the radio
antenna, (before I pulled the whole wiring harness out.)
As was mentioned in the first reply, I'm fairly sure it's an old analog
cell phone antenna wire, just missing the transmitter and handset now.

Can anyone tell me where to get one of these padded cushions I've seen
in the rear console of a couple SECs? My car is a 1989 and I just have
the deep console, no burl roll top.
Thanks,
Mike
