All:
Just wanted to follow up for everyone and let y'all know that I had a successful resolution and completion on the 560SEC top-end rebuild.
I successfully completed the mechanical rebuild a few weeks ago, and all was running well. However, I had a persistent vacuum leak that was leading to some strange starting and high idle characteristics when the car was in P and N. A smoke test revealed a vacuum leak in the intake system, most likely where the two halves of the intake manifold mated together where the rubber donuts connect them.
Removed, re-sealed and re-installed the intake system over the last few days, and the car is literally running like it's brand new. It's now so smooth that you can't tell that it's running. The lesson learned is that with appropriate persistence and determination, our beasties can be made to run flawlessly WITHOUT throwing parts at them.
Here's a quick summary of what I did, and how it all ended up. My SEC is running VERY happy now.
