[W126 Coupe] emission problem

Hi,
I took my 88 sec in for emissions an it failed , runninig too rich. So I took it to a shop that adjusted my 450SLC and it passed, $89.95. they told mre me that they couldn't get my sec to pass on the machine because they believe it has a intake leak and wanted $1,600.00 to fix it. I've had so many health problems that I just can't afford it. Someone posted that I should put clear silicone with my fingers around the base of the runners let dry overnignt and then return for test. Does this sound like something that would work? Also one said to start the car right after applying the silicone, which would suck some of the silicone into leak, but I thought that could hurt something. Any thoughts would really help me.
