[W126 Coupe] Defective years

The defective wiring looms effect all German made cars and started in 1993.

It varies a bit by manufacturer how quickly they were able to fix the problem, but you should be safe with cars made in 1996 and later.

The reason for the problem was a regulation that went into effect in 1993 requiring cars to be 100% recyclable.

The solution to this problem for the wiring manufacturers was to change the composition of the plastic shielding the wires. The new plastic turned out to become brittle when "cooked" over time when exposed to engine heat. The wires would loose their shielding and short against one another.

If you have this problem, every wire in the engine compartment will have to be replaced.

Not fun, but very expensive........

Could the group let me know what years Mercedes installed the cheap defective wiring looms and what years in the 500 and 600 class before and after are OK?
Much appreciated, Iain
