Henry,
As Mike says, if you are handy with tools and have some time and patience,
you can do this yourself. There isn't a ton of room in there to access the
bolts, but if you take your time, it can be done.
To answer your question what happens if you don't have it rebuilt and let it
run empty? You will have a rough/harsh suspension in the rear, no fun to
drive. You will burn up the pump as well, not sure what that does to the
motor since it runs off it. I'd either fix it, or remove the SLS and
convert to conventional rear suspension as on the 300, 420 and 500 models.
