Henry,
The pump can be rebuilt for under $10. Four allen head bolts hold it to the
engine, two more hold it together. There are three o-rings inside and any
local hydraulic hose shop can find you a set. The rebuild kit from MB is
(IIRC) around $50 and while it only includes one of the o-rings, it does
include the shaft seal out the back to the pump drive. I did not replace
that shaft seal but have rebuilt two of the pumps. Piece of cake!!
Call me and I'll talk you through it.
I put in new valve seals when I did the timing chain and that completely
stopped my oil usage/plug fouling. It's a DIY task, but a difficult one.
Might be a perfect task in the middle of winter though. :-)
Mike

The rear suspension hydraulic pump is leaking quite a bit and I have been
told that it would cost $1,300 parts & labor to replace it.
Can I just let the oil run out and not replace the pump? What would happen
if I did that?
I have also had a problem with the #4 spark plug fouling with oil and that
needs either an upper end rebuild for several thousand dollars or an engine
rebuild if the problem is oil rings.
