Though I have the 380SEC, I had my car tweaked to have the 560 rear axel & suspension system when I had to replace the rear tranaxel several years back.
Yes, my thinking would be 270CDI or may be the 300CDI in the current S

Cannot speak for a 270 CDI personally. A friend has one and is "over the moon with it."
I do have a 300 SDL and think it is the equal to if not superior to a 380 SEC.
Maybe in in my "head" but the 380 SEC has a different feel to it than my 560 SEC, not just the due to the motor but the overall substantiality of a 560 SEC.
I think Mercedes tweaded a few things between 1983 and 1990 that to me give the 560 SEC that "feel."
A 560 SEC with a 270 CDI would be quite the ride.

Same to all, don't think there is a diesel SEC but in the 123 (we've got one bought from the US). Anyway, have a thought in mind if my motor run out, will put in a diesel engine in. Probably the 270 CDI from the E series

I have driven a 380 SEC, very little if any difference from a 300 SDL. To me that blows the "speed" axiom idea part from Mercedes

123 coupes were offered as a CD, but no 124, 126 or 140 couple to my knowledge was offered as a diesel. I think the idea was luxury, comfort and speed all combined, and diesel (even turbo) didn't quite give you that back then!

Nope. Never from the factory. 380, 420, 500, and 560 gas engines is the list. AMG upgraded to some 6.0L, but IIRC, that's it.
