I don't remember exactly what it was that we drove but it was a small rental and I believe that it was French made.  Your description of the 306D-Turbo sounds very much like what I remember.

  The french have been making some fantastic diesel engined cars. The first one that I drove was a Peaugot 306 D-Turbo which was their diesel 'GTI'. For a small car, it was fast and quite and excellent to drive. It was probably the first diesel sports car that I'd seen.
