Hi Cal,

Re: The glass retainer bolts on the bottom rail. The glass is held in place
with the compression bolts on the metal rail you describe. There is no
glue.

Re: The door frame itself. The reinforced steel bar you describe may have
been added to deal with the common problem where one of the regulator bolts
that passes through this steel tears a hole greater in size than the
regulator retainer bolt/washer. This presumes you are not referring to the
USDOT rods that were added on certain model years to strengthen the door in
the event of a side impact. by way of example, I have no rods on the 83 but,
they have been added on the 86.

Whats happening. When the window is raised and the window switch held for a
time after the window 'tops out' the regulator arm takes on additional
torque that causes the regulator arm to twist and eventually crack. The
best you can hope for is to make a conscious effort to release the window
switch as the window makes the rubber seal.

Unfortunately, you have described two of the three failures on the window
lift. The torn bolt hole in the door steel itself and the twisted/soon to
be cracked regulator arm. Third would be stripped teeth on the regulator
motor gear itself.

Good luck,

Dick
