Chet,
Thanks for the post! I did not check the vacuum element but when I disconnected the vacuum hose it had some fluid in it. So I am hoping this is the problem. I don't remember seeing the bolts but I will take another look this weekend. Thanks again.

John,
It looks like there is just a clamping bracket that slips over the valve and
2 bolts attach it to the side of the transmission.
Remove the 2 bolts, slip the bracket off and pull out the vacuum element.
Behind the vacuum element, there's a thrust pin, spring and the actual
valve.
It maybe too late now, but did you check the vacuum element with a vacuum
pump to see it was actually bad/leaking?
Check these guys out for a manual on the 722.3 & 722.4 transmissions.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Transmission Modulator Valve
Hi,
My 89 SEC is blowing white smoke out of the exhaust. I am not losing any
coolant so I believe my transmission modulator valve is bad. Ordered a new
one. Got under the car to replace it but I could not get the old one off.
Turned it, pried it, pulled, etc. Before I really wrench it and break
something off that falls into the transmission, am I missing something? I
could not find any directions in the archives or on my owners manual CD.
Thanks for the help
