[W126 Coupe] Transmission Modulator Valve

Hi,

My 89 SEC is blowing white smoke out of the exhaust.  I am not losing any coolant so I believe my transmission modulator valve is bad.  Ordered a new one.  Got under the car to replace it but I could not get the old one off.  Turned it, pried it, pulled, etc.  Before I really wrench it and break something off that falls into the transmission, am I missing something?  I could not find any directions in the archives or on my owners manual CD.  Thanks for the help
