I wondered where that news item ended up.... it was meant to go to my Cognitive Neuroscience, Mind and Brain, and Psychiatry Research discussion forums...must have been half asleep at the wheel-mouse.

And yes, I have a lovely 1987 560SEC which has been running better and getting more than 10% better fuel economy since I hacked out the front of the air filter box:


I added the screens. So much for the cold air intake theory ~ with the high flow filter it is VERY responsive to the throttle.

Also note the single wiper. After the other one fell off and I removed the arm temporarily, I noticed that the single wiper worked better and looked much better. The only part of the screen to miss out is a bit of the passanger side (too bad...)
