Here is my understanding... From the factory, all solid colors were a single-stage paint. All metallic colors had the two-stage paint. 

However, many cars with the solid colors were often clear-coated, either by MBNA or by the dealer, prior to delivery. That is why some solid color cars DO have a clear-coat.
