I had to leave town (Toronto) quickly last week to attend a funeral in
Montreal (325 miles away). I went to my mechanic and asked if he had a fuel
pump relay for my car. He had one (not MB brand) and sold it to me ($160.00
Cdn). It was numbered 003 545 24 05 (same number as the MB branded part
already in the car???). I took it with me and headed for Montreal...1 hour &
40 minutes later the car did it's thing and lost power. I confidently put
in the "new" FPR and the car wouldn't even start. I waited 10 minutes and
put in the old part. 1 hour and 40 minutes later it did the same
thing....I finally got to Montreal and looked up a MB dealer. He indicated that he
had a MB replacement for # 003 545 24 05 for $250.00 than looked at his
records and said that this part number (which was in the car) was the wrong
number. He gave me an identical looking part # 003 545 25 05 at a cost of
$70.00. This is the same number that Shin mentioned last week. This part
got me around Montreal and back home without a hitch.
So thanks to Shin and all others who provided me with advise on my
problem...it appears to be solved!!
ps. I got back my original $160.00

I follow this list daily and now have a problem with my 1988 560 SEC
which
I could use some advice on. Twice in the last two weeks while driving
my
car lost power. Each time the trips were at highway speeds and after
about 1-1/2 hours of driving. On each occasion, the fuel gage was close
to the
?R? (reserve tank ) level. The car lost most of its power (like running
on 4 cylinders) but did not stall. I was able to get over to the curb
lane
at about 15-20 mph. I turned the ignition off each time, waited 4-5
minutes
and restarted?.it then ran fine.
I have had two mechanics look at it but no solution. Both suggested fuel
supply problems but the two fuel pumps were checked and appeared to be
functioning properly. They also suggested a fuel sensor problem but were
unable to check sensor while problem was not happening.
Other suggestions included: blockage in muffler system or catalytic
converter!
Any advice would be appreciated.
Russell
