[W126 Coupe] 1985 SEC A/C and Heater Doors Connected?

My 1985 SEC had an A/C problem where no air was blown out of the center
vents for either A/C or heating, however, it did blow out of the side vents
and front defrost vents.  The repair shop fixed the a/c but now the heater
only blows hot air out of the defrost vents and nothing out of the dash vents.
I am being told that the doors on the heater aren't working and they are not
connected to the a/c issue and being charged a fortune for the repair.
Does anyone know if there are different vent doors for the a/c and heater or
would they both be the same and perhaps the sensors on the heater were
not properly fixed thus causing the problem.
