Shin,

The issue you describe is easily remedied.? Remove the return line to
the pump from the steering box or at the inter cooler stub, this will
drain the reservoir and clear the lines and box once you 'dry' crank
the motor.? So, keep fresh fluid flowing into the sump while dry
starter cranking until the return line color goes from dark brown to
the refreshed fluid color. ? Never let the sump run dry. At
this point, green fluid running at the return outlet, stop (approx. 1.5
to 2 liters) and seal things up.? Replace the filter with a new one,
top off the sump to the base of the nylon where the arrow appears.

Jonathan, gave me this info and the correct replacement fluid brand
(not MB). ? Please ask Jonathan for the fluid type which is available
at a local shop near you in 1 liter cans.? I can look this weekend for
the label on my supply if you still have no reply.

I might also mention that after 15+ years both of the inter cooler
hoses should be replaced and please use the original MB clamps.

I live in Boston where the climate is variable but there are no long
term periods of extreme temp so perhaps other problems occur in your
area due to prolonged periods of dry heat. In any event, Jonathan
solved my issues on (3) MB's using the above solution.?? Just get the
hydraulic fluid he recommends from him, please.? I disposed of the MB
labeled? fluid (Febi) when (1) it was costly and (2) you needed a lot
of their small bottles to obtain 2 liters and (3) the fluid color did
not help identify the cleansing of the system.? In any event, no more
groaning for presumably another 15 years.? Filter change with sump
replenished 1X year for good measure under current maintenance.

Regards,

Dick

When I topped the oil off, the "moaning and groaning" went
away substantially but I could still detect it.

So I'm going to change the filter and see if it goes away completely.

Thanks Elm

Did the noise go away when you filled up the resivoir?

I just had the same issue on my 86' and found a very
slight leak in the crimp of my high pressure PS hose. When enough fluid
leaked out (over a period of many months) my PS started moaning.

Shin,

?

At bottom of the reservoir is the round filter.? I had
the groan too, but not low in fluid.? I flushed it, replaced the
filter, used MB fluid when replacing and the groan pretty much went
away.? I noticed it most on cold mornings, not during warmer weather.

?

To take out the filter and replace, you remove the nut
at the top of the pin after taking off the cap, just be careful not to
loose the spring that is under there, it will try and shoot out at you.

?

Hello everyone.

Recently on my '91 560SEC, the power steering "moans" when I turn it.

I looked at the reservoir and the oil was low so I topped it off.

I pressed on the belt and the belt deflects about 1/2".

I also heard that there is a filter that could be clogged.

Where is this located? Inside the reservoir?

Thanks, you guys are the best
