[W126 Coupe] 7" of play in park

That has to be an isolated instance-
In the 30+ years of driving, I have never personally or known of anyone that had the parking pawl 'wear out' on any car. Of course, I live in the Midwest where hills are non-existant and people don't use their emergency brakes when parking their cars.
These transmission pawls are normally made of hardened steel-
They would more likely shear due to a manufacturing defect or extreme abuse (throwing transmission into park while car is still moving for example) than from normal 'wear'.
I'm not saying it couldn't happen, I'm just saying there are a LOT of other things I'd suspect before I got to the parking pawl.
Just my 2 cents.

One car very much can wear out a parking pawl with regular use! Mercedes states that you should engage the parking brake under All conditions, regardless of incline..
I've personally have one friend who's pawl broke under 'normal' use..His 300SE was on a slight incline when it failed. He didn't even notice till the car was about 30 feet away and moving too fast to do anything about. It traveled about 500 feet, crazed one car and then wenth and down into a 15 foot gully where it came to rest against a good size tree (tulip poplar is I remember correctly!).
One less 300SE!

Before you take the trans apart again, I would inspect your drive shaft U-joints and rear axle backlash (play).
Maybe it's something else that's worn and introducing more slack in the driveline?
I have a hard time believing you can wear out a parking pawl with normal use (even without using the emergency brake on a regular basis).
