In my experience Benz auto transmissions have always had more travel before
the pawl locks than with domestic US cars. My guess is the cog gear used for
the park mechanisim is much coarser (fewer cogs per inch of circumference)
than on US cars.
My 86' SEC rolls just as far before it locks.
