Regarding the oil leaks, I did the upper oil pan while the engine was on
an engine stand, and found even that to be an adventure in aggravation
just due to having to extract all the little hex head cap-screws that
hold it on.
That being said, I seem to remember someone saying that it's possible to
remove while the engine is in place, by doing some creative juggling and
lifting the engine up off of the engine mounts to allow the pan to clear
the cross member.
You might also consider scrubbing the engine down with an engine cleaner
and see just where the leak is actually coming from. I'd suspect the
front main seal to develop a leak prior to the upper oil pan
spontaneously doing so. Both of my crank shaft main seals had done so
on my 500SEC's replacement motor.
Best of luck in finding it, and hopefully it's something easy to remedy!
