Sounds like the NSS (neutral safety switch) which is indeed attached to the driver's side of the trans.

Intermittently, my 87 560SEC wont start with the gear-shift left in "Park". Moving the gear shift to neutral is the work around so I suspect that it is the lockout switch or it's circuitry that is the problem.

I don't know where the switch is located but I suspect that it is underneath somewhere attached to the transmission. Problem is, my car is raked (lowered in the front) and crawling underneath it for an old guy is torture. If the switch is somewhere else (or by chance the problem is due to something else) I would appreciate hearing from anyone that has experienced a similar problem.
