Tom,
?
The chrome pieces for the side windows are fairly easy to remove. Just use a flat, plastic spatula with a soft rag underneath and carfully pop the chrome pieces off.
?
Are you doing the long chrome pieces on the gutter rail? They are a bit more challengind to get off without bending the pieces.

Tom,
?
As Axel suggests, plastic and blankets/towels will do the trick.? I found removing the sideview mirrors from the doors makes the door trim easier to remove.
?
If you end up damaging any of the 4 pieces, I have spares available from my parts car.
?
Just take it slow and steady.? Better to move a little at a time up and go all along and then trace back to the beginning instead of trying to pry it all the way up from one point.?

Ray,
?
Take a look at your parts and pull the MB part number, then cross check with the used parts. I'm assuming you know where the components are located.
?
The '87 and '88 models are of the correct series, but your car being post the '89 freshening up, I'm not sure the parts would be interchangeable. On the '91 MB changed a lot of parts, almost enough to merit a separate repair manual, so I would be even more careful with parts from a '91 for interchangeability.

Tom,
?
Then you're going to have to remove the rain gutter covers. Start with the flat pieces below the windows and move to the gutter rails when you've built up some confidence.

Tom,
?
Then you're going to have to remove the rain gutter covers. Start with the flat pieces below the windows and move to the gutter rails when you've built up some confidence.

I am thinking i want to remove all the chrome around the windows. The reason is that whatever clear coat (?) that is on there has peeled in a lot of places and I want to be sure the shop gets every last bit of it off before proceeding with the new paint.

Tom,

Thanks Jonathan. I'm wondering if I should just try to?pull all the side window chrome?myself. Do you have any suggestions for how to do this to minimize the opportunity to damage them?

they can be difficult to remove, but it the fellow is Careful and takes his time he should be OK..
Price of new isn't horrible..I know the rear bits are 90/side.
I'd say he's just covering his ass JIC..

Now that insurance is covering painting 3 of the 4 quarter panels on my 560SEC, I have decided to paint the whole car. My question is regarding the chrome trim around the door windows (top and bottom). The person doing the work said that he couldn't guarantee that they would come off cleanly for reuse. Does anybody have experience with this? I'm just wondering if he is being cautious in case they do get damaged or if it more likely?that it might not happen if due care is taken.?Thoughts? Thanks.
