After all the work did I took the car to Coral Springs this weekend and the turn signals went out they work if I fool with the switch. I understand that they are connected with the flasher relay but that is good. Does anybody have one for sale. Thanks Jim

Thanks Markus,

Because the car was sitting awhile, I think I want to drain the gas first and change the filter before running any distance. I have been reading about injector additives.

Any suggestions there?

If it was my car (and I just did this with a similar experience on my wife's car), I'd contact Jonathan on this list, check out his website:

www.blueridgemb.com

He can get you the right hoses, filters, belts, etc.

I'd get the car running first to warm it up a bit, makes fluid draining a little easier.

I personally use/like Amsoil synthetic products, but there are many other good ones out there.

Change the engine oil and filter (8.5 quarts).

Change trans oil and filter/gasket (about 13-14 quarts).

Change the diff fluid - no filter, about 1.5-2 quarts. Make sure to open the fill plug FIRST before the drain plug!

Change the power steering fluid and filter - about 2-4 quarts to flush that out.

Change the radiator coolant - about 2 gallons of Zerex G05 or MB coolant mixed with water 50/50.

Note sure if you have SLS suspension, if so, change that fluid/filter as well.

Does anyone have a list of part numbers and quantities of items needed to service a 500sec before operating the first time?

Engine Oil - Transmission - Radiator - Differential - Gasoline - Brakes - Rotors - Hoses - Belts

I want to give the mechanicals the best chance to stay good.

The car sat for over a year before I got it and I don't want to just start it and drive it without setting up a maintenance beginning point. There are no (zero) records associated with the car.

Any suggestions as to what to do and which products to use?

Thanks Dean

I read the same thing Jonathan. Can't recall if it was here or benzworld. The comments were something about viscosity. The new fluid too slick and not shifting properyl. I will try to find the posts.

Who commented as such? if you are doing a 'normal' trans service you replace about 95% of the fluid when you drain the pan, TC'er and change the filter.

Glad you are finding what you needed!

Yes, never know once you get it running. I'd probably suggest changing all fluids/filters and drive to see what's up. Get a tank of good gas in there with some fuel injection cleaner such as BG44K or something similar.

Good luck!

Markus et al,

I took the battery I have to a Interstate battery dealer. Would you believe it was a few minutes down the street and I live in a little coastal community just south of Vancouver? Amazing – anyway I digress!

I turns out there was a distinct absence of acid in the battery – so a new one was ordered this morning at $160 Canadian.

Thanks for your help. As the car has not been running for awhile, there may still be issues to comes. So… I might b posting to this forum again in the very near future!

Thank you,

Mark

Mark,

Check out Interstate Batteries, I believe the website is www.interstatebatteries.com <http://www.interstatebatteries.com/> . You can search for a local dealer/distributor. I have been using their batteries in all my vehicles with excellent success.

For the future if you plan to leave a battery unattended that long, I'd suggest a trickle charger of some sort, such as a battery tender. They can get totally discharged from sitting and this is not good for them, even if fairly new.

Hi again,

In the event I need to buy a battery, is there anyone on this forum (
possibly in Canada ) that might know where I can get a replacement battery
for a 1982 380SEC other than the Vancouver dealer?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,
Unlike a 57 Chevy or 57 Mercedes any car from the 80s on up draws a
lot of volts even when just sitting.
Alternators do not go bad from sitting.
I have had batteries that give off false information.
If you have another car that you could take the battery out of
would be the simplest way to go for a test.

You could also take the car for a good ride with the "old" battery
of an hour and see what happens when you try to restart...at home in
the driveway
keep cruisin
