Thanks for the update on the solution. As our toys get older we will
encounter these kinds of problems and it's nice to have a database of
fixes for future reference.

I finally figured out the stumble issue with my M119 engine.

Turns out age and ozone had gotten to the rubber boot underneath air
intake and the 2" tear and vacuum leak caused a terrible lean condition.

$25 part, but won't be here until Thursday.........

Got a new Hirschmann antenna from Jonathan and it works great.

Try 1/2 turn clockwise on the CIS mixture allen and see if that doesn't
improve the stumble.

Thanks for all the responses for the antenna.

I removed it this afternoon and opened it up to see if I could figure it
out.

It is a pretty simple mechanism. There are 5 wires going to the antenna,
but they all connect to the printed circuit board (PCB) and there are
only two wires going to the motor from the PCB. I guess the PCB is
monitoring the draw of the motor and shuts it down when it pulls too
much power. There is nothing supervising the nylon rope of the mast.

I couldn't see any cold solders or burn marks on the PCB so I guess it
is time for a new antenna.

Any other ideas on the engine stumbling?

I had problems similar to yours in a 190e and found out after trouble
shooting everything in the trunk that the switch in the dash was bad. It
had corroded up and caused the trunk system not to work right.

Ian,

I did not do anything to the electronics while removing the old antenna
mast and inserting the new one. After it did not want to extend, I
simply detached the 6-pin plug on top of the antenna body and reattached
it, just to see if I could get it to re-set itself. That didn't work, so
I had to pull the mast out again and re-insert it. Now it goes up and
down, but does not stop retracting.

I'll take the antenna out to see if I can't figure it out.

The antenna, I can't remember what's in it, been a while since I had one
apart, but there is a switch/switches inside that trigger an open
circuit when the antenna reach's its limits open and closed. Some use a
small micro switch that gets hit when the reel reach's furthest close
and open, the reel carrier has a spring loaded pivot that when the cable
is retracted, or extended, it pivots and hits the switch, cutting the
power, through a set of small relays.

Was the electrical connection plug and play or did you have to mess with
the wiring? Did you connect the antenna wire from the new system? I
suggest that you bench the antenna, I'd be surprised if the mast is too
short, because it doesn't matter as the cable reach's its limits and
ratchets up the reel carrier. Do you have the electrical schematic? It
will show you what each one of the wire does.

Axel,

Sounds like the antenna may be too short.

The stumble sounds like what I experienced with both my 84
500SEC and 91 560SEC. This happened when each of the cars had about
150K miles. We never found the problem, but suspect the vacuum line to
the transmission.

Hi everyone,

I'm still doing battle with the audio make-over I embarked on
about six months ago. It is coming along and I have CD/DVD and iPod
sound again for the first time since December.

I changed out the antenna mast with one I picked up at the local
(Devon, PA) MB dealership. I got the old one out without a hitch and the
new one went in fairly smoothly as well.

The first sign of trouble was that the new mast did not rise
after the installation.

I got it to go up and retract, but every time it goes down, the
motor continues to spin after the mast is fully retracted and makes an
infernal noise spinning against the nylon rope.

Anyone got an idea of what is going on?

Also, my M119 engine has developed a pronounced stumble. I
happens when the engine has not fully warmed up and when applying the
throttle after idling.

I strongly favor a fuel over spark as the cause, but am open to
ideas about what solutions to try.
