Yes, this is correct. Plugs typically come with the top tips screwed on. I recently replaced the plug wires in my 560SL and refreshed the plugs at the same time. Just take a pair of needle-nose pliers and CAREFULLY loosen each tip, then twist it off the rest of the way using your fingers.

BTW don't use fancy plugs - the cheap and most current spec Bosch plugs are just fine (or I think NGK makes an acceptable replacement). Platinum plugs of any type are a waste of money and not appropriate for our M117 engines.
