I have a 91 560 SEC that had similar low compression about a year ago
including old consumption deteriorating to something like 2 qt in about 300
miles. The change was subtle at first until it reached what I indicated....

Solution was to use a detergent product with the oil for about 20 - 30
minutes and then drain and refill with a cheap oil along with a new filter.
Run engine for another 30 minutes and again drain. At that time I was
"using" Castrol 20W - 50. Refill with your oil of choice and filter and do
the compression test again. The results should be immediate if that is your
problem
My result was a raise of compression to the normal of around 185 +/- . The
mechanic that suggested this said the problem was most likely the ring
groves of the pistons being clogged preventing the rings from doing the
function of maintaining compression and therefore the high oil consumption.

Years ago I had heard of the same thing except the person ran transmission
fluid for several hundred mile and his problem cleared up.

Certainly worth a try before you dump BIG bucks into your engine. Good
luck, Ken

Jonathon has stated numerous time of using MOBIL EP 15W - 50. In
researching this oil in reference to the old school technology it is the
best for our dated vehicles.... Has to do with additives that prevent wear
of the internal parts.
