[W126 Coupe] Tires

I definitley recommend the tire rack as a resource.? They have accounts with tire installers that is less expensive to go through them than to negotiate it yourself ... by a lot!? For example, I had my tires delivered to Tire Kingdom where they get 39.95 per corner for low profile 16"? Through Tire Rack it was 11.50.?
I had Michelin Pilots on my 380SEC (I have Lorinzer wheels), but they wear out wayyyy too fast.? So I went to Continental Conti's and I love them.? They have far better longevity that the Pilots.? I have PIRELLI P4 FOUR SEASONS on my 560SEL and they seem to be last many many miles and have great road manners.? I have Dunlops on my 500SE and have hammered them with even wear and handling characteristics to date?(I dont recall which specific Dunlops), the 500 has Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks around it, corning well using the extra power from the Euro engine.
For everyday stuff like my 300TD, 300D and 190D (1964) ... I am a Michelin man.
Good luck!
Bruce

Any suggestions for new tires on 1985 500 SEC?
Live in San Diego so warm weather mostly no need for snow treads.
Thanks,
Robert

Hi
I just got the news that my 500 will cost too much to repair, so now I am
going to look for a replacement. (nearly EUR 17K for chassis/body work--
OK thats a mercedes shop and would be expensive! but even a private
shop would charge even a third to half and still its too much).
Ultimate goal is to bring it home with me in a few years. From this I have
considered a 380 SEC which was sold from the very beginning in the USA
and thus would be no problem to insure.
I notice a huge difference in displacement, but a very small difference in
horsepower. Somebody told me that consume nearly the same amount of
gas. Are there any other big differences (besides the obvious). I know that
one can get about 500,000 KM on a 500 but I don't know if the 380 motor is
as well built.
Suggestions/ideas???
Andy

I wouldn't want a US 380 if I lived in Europe. The US 380 only had
155hp. It's a fine engine outside of that, but if you live in Europe
where 380s came with 204hp, no need to buy a US model
All non-US 380s came with a double row timing chain. Only 1984-1985 380s
had a double row timing chain in the US.
I think it gets a few more mpg than the 500.

I have both US and euro 380. I must say that
the us is nothing special but the euro is quite a
nice little engine. It
is superior to the US with
the cams used, the dual chain, the exhaust
manifolds, and is much more powerful. If you
can get your hands on the euro I'd
recommend that over the US 500. It has more
power and better gas mileage (21.5 mpg). It is
however the higher compression engine which
in turn requires premium gas. PS: thanks for
the springs Richard the car looks sooo much
better.

A little insight on the 380 US engine, 307 rear end, no cats,
and 5 liter cams with solid lifters. It now can get out of
Its shadow.

Hi
Thanks, I just got back from the dealer/workshop. There I looked at
a 500 SEC from 1985.
It is probably the last of the 1st series (production date 9/1985).
I am looking to get this
one. It has only 180K Kilometers on it (mine has 344K). The chasis
is very clean as well
as the interior.
It is was brought in for sale by an old lady who
can't drive any longer.
I only know about the EURO versions of the SEC and know that the 380
went as long here
as the 500 (both introduced in 1981/2--which was my problem with the
insurance -- what to
with with a 500 that was built two years before they were officially
sold there) and as you
say was replaced by the 420.

I should mention I can *ONLY* get EURO versions (nearly anyways!) as that
is where I am ;-)
