As a couple of others have said, that seems to be about the going rate 
for a competent transmission rebuild.

I was checking around on that subject in my area, while I had the 
transmission out due to an engine swap, and was quoted ~$2000 for a 
rebuild by the one shop that every mechanic and MB indy in the area kept 
pointing to as THE great place to have a tranny done, and the only 
reputable MB tranny shop in the area.

I ended up crossing my fingers and assembling the engine and 
transmission as it stood.  So far so good, but we'll see.
