[W126 Coupe] who knows their gen 1 diffs and axles?

I know I can't use a gen 2 diff in my 1985 without some serious work. On
the other hand, all the gen 1's look to share the same subframe, while
there is a parts break for the diff carriers for 1985 and I'm after the
break. I have access to a 1984 2.88 rear end from a diesel. I imagine it
would work if I swap over the diff with the axles (do I imagine
correctly?), but does anybody know how the rear ends/axles differ? Can
the diesel rear end take high torque? Are the diesel axles in some way
worse than those found on the gasoline cars (if they are in fact different)?
Thanks in advance
