[W126 Coupe] Power Steering Noise

It turned out to be low steering oil. I think it must expand when it is warm and I probably had a quick look only when the car was warm. But when cold, and on a closer look, it was only about half an inch's worth. I topped it up and the noise stopped.

Dodged a bullet :)

The old girl runs beautifully.

Thanks for all the advice just the same - next time it probably won't be quite so simple :)

On another matter - since the passenger side windscreen wiper fell off (blade fell off and I removed the arm temporarily) the wiper works much better (faster sweep, sort of flicks around like on a racing car), looks much better and wipes just as well (except for about 6" on the passenger side).

Needless to say I've never bothered replacing the wiper on that side - it is a very inexpensive modification that takes years off the old girl's apparent age :)

Either add Lucas power steering additive or change the fluid out to Mobil 1 syn tranny fluid with then add the Lucas. I run Mobil 1 syn tranny fluid in my pump with Lucas additive. Had not made a noise in almost 100K. I did replace the filter in the pump.

Hi Markus,
my steering box has been reconditioned and is nice and tight (no play). I suppose I'll have to take it back to the guy who did the work and see if he knows any more.

My car used to do that. Flushing did nothing to help, using MB fluid did nothing to help. Finally after a new steering box was put in, the noises stopped. Guess the box was getting old and groaning...

Hi,
whenever I turn the wheel to left or right when driving there is a kind of hum coming from the power steering. Only seems to occur when the car is cold and goes away after a while.

Is it air in the system or what? Any ideas?

The sound is like a fog horn at a distant.

Robert
