[W126 Coupe] Power Steering Noise

Hi Robert,

Jonathan gave me a few tricks sometime back for two Mercedes with
groaning ps pumps.

1. Drain the sump (suction) and remove filter.
2. Buy locally 3 liters of this green hydraulic fluid (Jonathan knows
the brand)
3. Remove the return line on the ps pump
4. Fill the sump to the top and carefully _cold crank_ the motor
stopping before the sump is sucking air
5. Add more green stuff to sump
6. Rotate wheel left then right a couple times then
7. Repeat this process (about the end of the 2nd liter) until you get
nice green fluid on the return line.
8. Button up the return line, check for leaks.
9. Install new filter
10. Start the motor and top off the sump (any cavitation should stop
in a few hours)

Result - no more groan.

Please check with Jonathan on the above steps as I did this from memory.

Failing this fix replace the pump with a genuine MB rebuilt from Jonathan.

The above worked on one MB and required a pump on the other. In both
cases things have been nice and quiet for a year or two as I did both
pumps at about the same time.

Regards,
Dick
