[W126 Coupe] Larger Diameter Wheels

I guess my suspicions are confirmed. Large diameter (with low aspect ratio)
wheels tend to give good handling and the (original) tires on the sedan or
coupe favor a more comfortable ride. So if the object is a day of fun and twisty
roads I'll use the SL with 18 inch rims and 35 and 45 aspect ratios
(front/back) and if I want to go somewhere 600 miles away, I'll settle for the
smaller (16) inch wheels with a 60 AR, with the comfortable ride they were designed
for in a sedan or coupe. But I'll stick with the tradeoff choices made by
the designer. After all, the handling of MB sedans and coupes is still very
good when pushed, even if not at the peaks available for trading off significant
ride quality.

If you are after a stiffer ride, or more sporty suspension response than
the vehicle was originally designed to target, the shorter/stiffer
sidewall makes an easy way to change that.

In my car's case, I am not the affluent middle aged businessman who
wants to flaunt his fine taste in automobiles. Instead, I enjoy the
power of the car, but also enjoy a reasonably taut suspension response,
which is a little difficult to get in a car of this size, especially
when it was engineered to be refined in all it does. (Other than the
nice shove in the rear when the pedal meets the floor...)

That being said, in a few years I may change my opinion on this and
change to a smaller diameter wheel and tire combination, putting my ride
back to a cushy feeling touring suspension setup. Who knows what may
happen, but it's a matter of 20 lug nuts and it's done.
