Dick,
You may be right. We'll see how it turns out.
The installation I'm doing is "Infinite Baffle (IB)", or good old "Free Air". The advantage is that I don't have to fit a large sealed or ported box around the subwoofer. In an IB installtion, the important thing is to seal the front of the speaker from the back.
I listen to mostly classical music, which is very challenging in a car due to the wide dynamic range, but the subwoofers will add a solid foundation, especially with organ works.

Hi Axel,
Leaving the plastic in place is problematic. It will vibrate and create distortion on the subs. You need to clear away the plastic and build using high density particle board or some other dense wood if you want the varnished look. I was able to fit 8 inch subs with individual sealed chambers and then set sealed back box raised mid's to either side.
Admittedly, I was looking for clear deep base for jazz so, not a trunk thumping fan.
Not a critique just what I noted when testing the original hat shelf with two plastic trays before gutting and building a variation of Webjamin's masterpiece.
Regards,
Dick

That is a nice integration of subwoofers in the rear shelf.
I'm currently in the process of installing a pair of 10" subwoofers in my rear shelf. I aim to make it as stealthy as possible by leaving the storage box lids in place. After turning them into swiss cheese, of course......

Here's a couple of photos of the modification I made (see attached). The wood sat in the exact space as the stock bins and was also beveled to match. The speakers are two "free-air" 8" subs. At one time I had converted the plans to an Adobe file for a few folks in the group. I'll see if I can find them..... unless someone else in the group still has the plans?
regards, lance
